Weekly Update

27 February 2012

International Day

  • When: Saturday 3 March 2012
  • Where: Courtney House Senior Campus (202 Main Street)
  • Time: 10:00 till 14:00

This is an event to bring families together but also to celebrate the wonderful diversity of cultures, languages and traditions present at the school. Jumping castles; games; fun activities and an Olympic Theme Accessory Parade are some of the features of this event.

The theme of this year’s annual international day event is the Olympic Games. Therefore, children and parents may dress in their traditional/cultural outfits but are encouraged to wear accessories which support the theme of the Olympic Games. Letters explaining the event and invitations for families to showcase their country of origin shall be made available on Monday.

An entrance fee of R25 per family is applicable. These tickets are available from the school office and we request that tickets are purchased prior to the event. Please purchase your tickets early.

Business Partnership

It is with delight that we wish to inform you that Demi and Cara have accepted membership shares in Courtney House Learning Centre cc and are partners, together with Jo, in the business. Demi, Jo and Cara shall remain as the main management structure of the school and continue to appreciate the awesome and dynamic staff, who continue to deliver Education Excellence in a Global Context.

Art Project

The Art Project for the next week is a Cloudscape project using a watercolour technique inspired by the artist, John Constable. Children are required to have their watercolours available at school for this project.

Junior Camp

The Grade 4 and 5 children shall attend an adventure camp at Bushveld Adventures in Parys from Monday 23 April until Thursday 26 April. Information Packs and Indemnity Forms shall be made available during this week.

Oxford Mathematics and Science Dictionary

Many parents cited difficulty in obtaining the Oxford Maths and Oxford Science prescribed dictionaries for students in Grade 4 – 8. The school has ordered a second batch of these books for your convenience. These books are available and can be purchased at R180-00 per copy.

Please submit payment for your child’s media pack as soon as possible but before the end of February. Media Pack Items are being ordered from international companies so the aim is that these items shall be used officially from the second term.

A reminder that IGCSE and AS/A Level students writing examinations in 2012 have scheduled weekly assessments on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that students are preparing adequately for these assessments and monitor the results that they attain.

Accountant Request

The school accountant has requested that only the following name be used on cheques when making payments: “Courtney House Learning Centre” otherwise they cannot be accepted.

Waiting Lists

Please be advised that many classes are full and unfortunately additional requests for the placement of children in certain classes cannot be met. These children shall be placed on waiting lists until a vacancy occurs.

Valentine’s Day

To celebrate Valentines Day on Tuesday 14 February, children may wear civies to school. The only request is that a highly visible love heart is seen. Children may show some creativity and imagination in this regard, however, it is a normal school day with classes continuing as usual.

Foreign Languages Media Pack

These media packs for Afrikaans, French and Spanish are compulsory for all students in Pre-R – IGCSE as they shall be used for homework and assessment purposes too. Please submit payment for your child’s media pack as soon as possible but before the end of February. For further information please contact Teacher Linda.

Mumps

If your child displays flu-like symptoms accompanied by fever, sore throat and slightly swollen face or neck, please keep them at home and seek medical advice. A few reported cases of mumps has occurred so please be aware that this children’s illness is making its rounds.

Aftercare

Please be advised that aftercare is only available until 17:00. For safety and security purposes, any children still at the Junior Campus (Dey Street) at 17:00 are taken to the Senior Campus (Main Street). Please ensure that you collect your children on time.

Needlework Extra Mural

Teacher Jana has returned so needlework shall resume this week.

Kandinsky Art Project

All children in Pre-R – Grade 7 are reminded to bring their art supplies, jar lids and objects to trace for the Kandinsky Art project which was started last week and shall continue into this week.

Swimming Classes

Important letters went out on Friday concerning class swimming lessons for students in Grade 4, 6 and 8. Please ensure that you have received a copy and completed the consent form. Plain navy blue swimsuits and swimming caps are required.

Please take note that no child may be permitted to swim without a signed consent and indemnity form. This applies to the Junior Swimming classes too.

English Handbook

The prescribed English Handbook is not in print at present and cannot be ordered as yet. Most book stores are also out of copies. As soon as they become available again, you shall be informed.

Needlework Extra Mural

Please note that there shall be no needlework extra mural activity until further notice as Teacher Jana is ill with mumps and a secondary virus. We wish Teacher Jana (Grade 1) a speedy recovery.

Scrapbooks

Each student from Grade 1 to Grade 7 is required to have an A4 SCRAPBOOK (blank blotting paper pages). Please ensure that your child has this additional item. Scrapbooks are now available from the school office at R30 per scrapbook.

Examination Schedules

Senior students writing IGCSE and AS/A Level Cambridge International Examinations in May-June have received their official examination schedules. We encourage these students to put in as much extra effort as they can over the next few weeks as preparation for these exams. Healthy nutrition, moderate exercise and sufficient sleep is also advised.

International Day Event

Please diarise Saturday 3 March for our annual international day event. More details and information pertaining to the event shall follow soon.
